Chopta Tungnath Trek

The Chopta Tungnath Trek is one of the most breathtaking and accessible treks in the Indian Himalayas, located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. Offering a rare combination of serene landscapes, spiritual significance, and adventure, this trek attracts nature lovers, photographers, trekkers, and pilgrims from across the country and beyond.

A Gateway to the Himalayas
The journey starts from Chopta, a picturesque hill station often referred to as the “Mini Switzerland of India.” Surrounded by dense forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron, and blessed with uninterrupted views of Himalayan peaks like Chaukhamba, Trishul, and Nanda Devi, Chopta serves as the base for the Tungnath and Chandrashila trek. The region is also part of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, home to a variety of Himalayan flora and fauna. Bird watchers will particularly enjoy spotting Himalayan monals, eagles, and other rare species along the trail.

Tungnath – The Highest Shiva Temple in the World
The first major stop on the trek is Tungnath Temple, perched at an altitude of 3,680 meters. It is the highest Shiva temple in the world and one of the Panch Kedar temples in Uttarakhand. The ancient temple is steeped in mythology and is believed to have been built by the Pandavas. The spiritual energy of this place, combined with its high-altitude location, creates a truly divine experience for visitors. The well-paved trail from Chopta to Tungnath is around 3.5 km and is suitable for beginners, families, and even children with moderate fitness levels. The path winds through alpine meadows and opens up to jaw-dropping views of snow-capped peaks.

Chandrashila – Sunrise Above the Clouds
From Tungnath, trekkers can continue their journey for another 1.5 km to reach Chandrashila Peak, standing at approximately 4,000 meters. The climb is steeper but rewarding, especially at sunrise. From the top, you can witness a 360-degree panoramic view of the Himalayas, which includes peaks like Kedarnath Dome, Bandarpunch, and Sumeru Parbat. According to legend, Lord Rama meditated at Chandrashila after defeating Ravana, adding to the spiritual significance of this spot.
